On Wednesday, November 17, 2010 the MSBA Book Club met for the first time at Biddeford Middle School and Biddeford Intermediate School.  Despite all the different after-school activities going on that day the turn out was great at both schools!  We spent time eating yummy snacks and buzzin’ about books on the MSBA 2010-2011 list that we have already read.  One book that got a lot of buzz was Nubs: The True Story of  a Mutt, a Marine, & a Miracle by Major Brian Dennis, Mary Nethery, and Kirby Larson.

Nubs, an Iraqi dog of war, has never had a home or a person of his own.  He’s the leader of a pack of wild dogs living off the land and barely surviving. But Nubs’s life changes when he meet Marine Major Brian Dennis.  The two form a fast friendship, made stronger by Dennis’s willingness to share his meals, offer a warm place to sleep, and give Nubs the kind of care and attention he has never received before. Nubs becomes part of Dennis’s human “pack” until duty requires the Marines to relocate a full 70 miles away–without him. Nubs has no way of knowing that Marines aren’t allowed to have pets.  So begins an incredible journey that will take Nubs through a freezing desert,  filled with danger, to find his friend and will lead Dennis on a mission that will touch the hearts of people all over the world.

Other books that got some buzz included Anything But Typical by Nora Raleigh Baskin, 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass, and A Taste For Red by Lewis Harris.  You can check out these author’s websites! Just find them on the Author Websites List over on the right-hand side of our blog and click on their name.  If you weren’t there  you aren’t going to believe what you missed out on at this month’s meeting!  One lucky student won a FREE copy of Diary of a Wimpy Kid 5: The Ugly Truth!  You could be the next winner so don’t miss out!  Our next MSBA Book Club meeting  will be Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 2:40-3:25.  We hope you will join us to buzz about what you are reading!  The Late Bus will be available.   If you have any questions contact Deanna at
